DIY Cleaning Spray

One of the ways I match my values with my money is by making my own all-purpose cleaner. I started making this DIY cleaning spray regularly after learning how in a family education class I took when my oldest child was a baby. It’s easy to make, easy to use, and far less toxic than most cleaners.

Before I tell you how to make it, I should tell you that it is not approved for completely eliminating germs that cause things like stomach flu or coronavirus. If you are dealing with an active infection, definitely go with a high-powered, EPA approved disinfectant

This DIY cleaning spray is great for more basic, day to day, cleaning tasks. Vinegar can be quite effective against most germs, particularly if left on for a minute before wiping it off. We use it to wipe down counters (don’t use it on marble), doorknobs, and other frequently touched items around the home on a daily basis.

Supplies:

  • 1 - 32 oz spray bottle

  • ½ cup white distilled vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon dish soap

  • Water

  • Essential oils (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Add the vinegar and water to the bottle.

  2. Add the dish soap. (If you add the dish soap before the water, the suds will prevent you from filling the bottle.)

  3. (Optional) Add a few drops of essential oil, such as lavender, lemon, orange, or tea tree.
